In January 2006, an extension to ECE R30 came into effect which defined the test procedures and approval markings for self supporting run flat tires.

To fulfill the run flat approval criteria, tires have to run without failure on the test wheel for a minimum of one hour at a speed of 80 km/h. The reduction of the sidewall section height under these test conditions may not exceed 20%.

Tires fulfilling the test requirements may be marked with an "F" after the type designation, e.g. 225/45 RF 17. In addition, they have to have the ISO symbol (snail) incorporated in the sidewall lettering.

Tires approved according to this regulation are defined as being of a special type, similar to the type classifications „radial“ and „diagonal“.

The following Continental products are marked with RF and the ISO „snail“ symbol (as of 10/2007):

195/55RF16 XL 91H CPC2 SSR – Option on Opel Corsa

205/55RF16 91H+V CPC2 SSR – Option on Opel Astra and Zafira

235/45RF17 XL 97W CSC3 SSR – Option on Ford Mondeo

The legal situation in several european countries, is in accordance with Directive 92/93. This stipulates that the same tire type must be fitted on all wheel positions. In other words, in addition to having to be the same tire size (with the exception of car manufacturer approved combinations), same LI and SS, the make and pattern must be identical. Therefore the mixing of RF SSR tires with SSR tires or for that matter with conventional tires is forbidden. It would however be permitted to change over the complete set of tyres, thereby conforming to the „same tire type on all wheel positions“ stipulation.
